Since 1992, our Alliance has sponsored a range of free youth programs at Randall’s Island Park, which has given thousands of community children the opportunity to go outside and play in the great outdoor right in the middle of New York City. In coming years, and with your help, we hope to reach even more children.
RIPA believes it is important to give our children the opportunity to exercise and learn about healthy living. We sponsor a number of diverse youth programs, which are provided free of charge and give children the opportunity to play sports, enjoy nature and learn about healthy living.

Jesse Owens Track & Field Program
The Jesse Owens Track & Field Program is an after-school program geared toward teaching and practicing the fundamentals of the sport. RIPA coaches teach children, ages 7-14, the basics of sprinting, distance running, relays, high jump, long jump and hurdles. The program also incorporates lessons on nutrition and has an emphasis on healthy living. Through the program, children also learn about Jesse Owens, who won the Olympic trials at Randall’s Island in 1936, and went on to win his historic gold medal in the Berlin Olympics.
The program takes place for six weeks in the fall and eight weeks in the spring at Icahn Stadium. This free program services approximately 200 children from local public schools in Harlem and the South Bronx each season.
