Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC

Big Brothers Big Sisters is the nation’s founding and New York City’s largest mentoring organization. We serve over 4,000 children in all 5 boroughs. Big Brothers Big Sisters was founded in 1904 in New York City, when a court clerk named Ernest Coulter made a plea to save a young boy. His mission is still continued today. The mission to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1 to 1 mentoring relationships with adults that can change their lives for the better, forever. The youth we serve are between the ages of 7-17, where some are living in single parent homes coming from all 5 boroughs. They are referred to the agency through schools, social service agencies, word of mouth, families and the court system. We are in need of volunteers to become mentors, as we call them our Bigs. The commitment we ask for is the volunteer to meet with their little sister or brother twice a month for about 4 hours each time for at least a year. During these meetings the Big and the Little will go on match outings. Match outings are free to low costs activities that the Big will pay for. They can be anywhere from bike rides in Central Park, a movie and a slice of pizza or a Broadway show. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or signing a child up to get a big brother or sister go to our website
